Sara: I’ve been shooting weddings for about 8 years now. The first 5.5 years were in my hometown of Milwaukee, WI and the last 2.5 have been here in Nashville. Like most photographers, I shot pretty much everything in the beginning of my career, but I really honed in on shooting primarily weddings in the last couple years and it has been so rewarding. I’ve met so many great people from clients to fellow vendors to wedding guests turned clients. I feel very lucky that this is my job.

Sara: I became interested in photography in high school and decided to go to college for photography while applying to schools. My mom was an art major in college and always encourages us to pursue creative interests. I was excited about the idea of capturing weddings so I started assisting an established wedding photographer and learned the ropes. I got my photography degree from Columbia College Chicago and I’ve been in business since then. I’m from a small suburb of Milwaukee so my business got off the ground by word of mouth referrals in our small community. As I got older, my own friends were getting married and I shot a lot of their weddings which helped me move into shooting weddings full time.

Sara: I’m in this to shoot couples as they truly are – in love, silly, romantic, passionate. I encourage movement and interaction, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve for those couples who don’t love being in front of the camera. Along with striving for authenticity, I’m always excited to personalize sessions whether it’s including their pets or shooting at a place significant to the couple. If there’s one thing I’ve learned shooting weddings, it’s that there is no ‘right’ way to get married. There are SO many different ways to personalize weddings and engagements, and I’m here to capture all of that.

Sara: I’ve been told by clients that they feel at ease with me, which is so important when you’re being photographed. The more comfortable a couple is in front of the camera, the more they forget about the camera. I tend to be easy going and go with the flow and I think that really helps me as a photographer. Things hardly ever go exactly as planned so being able to adapt and make a new plan is vital. Whether there’s a sudden downpour or change in locations, I’m always looking to make the best of plan changes. I’ve also been told that I can be quite stealthy. My stealth mode comes in handy during those intimate emotional moments where everyone is truly present and having an once-in-a-lifetime experience. The shots that people didn’t even know that I was getting often end up being some of my favorites.

Sara: I have seen a lot of non-traditional wedding parties in the last year, and I love it. While a symmetrical wedding party is visually pleasing, it just doesn’t work for everyone. If your dad is one of your best friends, put him in your wedding party! If you have more close friends/siblings than your fiancééò, have an uneven bridal party. I actually love the creative challenge of photographing a non-traditional wedding party.I have also had a lot of backyard weddings, and they have been some of my favorites. They’re just something so comfortable and relaxed about having your wedding somewhere you and your family are familiar with.

Sara: If I shoot your wedding, I will happy cry right along with you. Chances are exponentially greater if anyone’s dad cries.

Oh I love a good happy cry! Haha! Thank you so much for sharing all about your photography with us Sara! You can check out Sara Bill Photography here online and also be sure to give her a follow over on Instagram!
