Tell us about Fancy This Photography!

Nikki: I am totally swooned with Fancy This Photography. I know, I am a little biased, but when you put your heart, soul, (and weekends) in to something, you kind of have to love it! Fancy This caters to all things wedding and family portraiture. Although based in North Carolina, I travel to and from Nashville quite often for local vendor collaborations. Fancy This, in a simple aspect, is a photography business based and founded on love; all love, simple and extravagant. When I was first catering this idea of my own business, I wanted to make sure I was making something that my kind of couple would totally dig. Not something you see and turn away, I wanted something that you would see and feel. Fancy This Photography is all about that emotion. I want you to feel what my couples feel.

How long have you been in business?

Nikki: I bought my first legitimate camera in 2008. After years of training, second shooting, and schooling, I can officially say I have been on my own for about 4 years now.

How did you get started in weddings?

Nikki: Ahh, I was a young one. The industry pulled me in when I was just 18. My sister co-owns her own hair and makeup business, so whenever she needed an extra set of “hands” I was always up for the challenge. It was then that I started learning the ins and outs of weddings. I had my first real “wedding industry” job while I was still in college. I went to school and graduated with a degree in agriculture and horticulture [I know, totally not what I am doing today!] so it was only fitting to have a job as a florist. This job really opened my eyes and sparked a good firework to what the folks in the industry do. I wanted to make the images that we [the florist] were receiving to advertise with. I wanted that extra connection with the couples. My passion really blossomed during that time!

What's the philosophy behind Fancy This Photography?

Nikki: My philosophy is simple; showcase my couples' love. Not every wedding is the same, and if that were the case then I would have a very boring career. I want to make sure my couples view their portraits and feel as though I just reached right into their heart and made their love something extra spectacular for the world to see. All love is spectacular, but to create something that couples feel connected with is a different ball game. If I don't show their emotion, then it is a bust; I can't have that. My couples are meant to love everything about themselves. Marriage is a wonderful, sacred tradition. What more than to have heirlooms during this special time?

What are your strengths compared to others photographers?

Nikki: A part of me feels that I should say the regular round about things like “technically my images are great!” or “I really know my ins and outs of light,” and although I feel those ways, I can't really give you the full take. My best strength is communication. As a bride, myself, I know that planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful events in a persons life. Stress is not good in front of the camera, so I love to make friends with all of my couples. I want them to know that I am a friend, above all else, and will laugh with them throughout the journey. It's my job to make my couple feel at ease, and I mean, I think I do a great job at that. Some people are really good at business, some are better directing, but I am good at making my couples feel completely in the moment. That is when the real magic happens.

What attracts brides to your business?

Nikki: Brides want to see themselves as they truly are–gorgeous. My images aren't all models, they are real brides, and they receive artwork of themselves from one of the most happiest times of their life. I truly feel like the brides that I attract are completely in love with the thought of love, and are so willing to let go and let love.

Describe the bride who is most attracted to Fancy This Photography.

Nikki: Fearless. Adventurous. Loud. Sweet. Humble. Adorable.

What is the biggest trend in photography that brides and grooms might appreciate?

Nikki: Honestly? Lifestyle images. I know, the posed traditional portraits are great for mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, but the lifestyle images are for the couple. The raw, unfiltered life that surrounds them is so poetic in the scheme of things. I feel as though this style has been underrated for many years, but it's prevalent in the years leading up.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about Fancy This Photography?
